Move over, emerald. Purple’s taking your place.

Global color guru Pantone has named “Radiant Orchid” as the official color of 2014. A blend of fuschia, purple and pink undertones, this soft hue “reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen purples popping up in the trends. Sherwin-Williams recently chose “Exclusive Plum” as its 2014 Color of the Year. Pantone says Radiant Orchid was a perfect pick because it emanates joy and health and will spruce up any room.

For the interior designer in you, Radiant Orchid will be your versatile go-to hue, complementing olive and deep greens as well as turquoises, teals and even yellows. Bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid “reenergizes almost any color palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces,” the Pantone folks say.

Since 2000, Pantone has chosen an official color of the year, scouring the entertainment industry, art collections and technology for inspiration for just the right shade. Previous color kings include “Emerald,” “Tangerine Tango” and “Honeysuckle.”
